AI development moves fast. New features and capabilities emerge constantly, and the pace of change is extraordinary. The progress made over the last few years alone has been remarkable, the quality of AI-generated content today is virtually unrecognizable compared to where the technology stood just three years ago. 

Yet despite this progress, generative imagery has fallen short of the standards required by professional production companies looking to incorporate it into their finishing and virtual production workflows. The reason comes down to a fundamental technical limitation: while generation quality has vastly improved, AI-generated content still outputs an 8-bit SDR image.

Asteria: Making AI Cinematic

Asteria is a premium AI-powered film production studio pushing the boundaries of storytelling and cinematic experience. Sitting at the intersection of creativity and technology, Asteria puts creative control in the hands of filmmakers while leveraging AI to drive production efficiencies without compromising artistic vision. 

Asteria's Tribeca-selected short film ChikaBOOM! showcases this vision in action. The film blends hand-drawn 2D, CG, and generative animation to deliver a visually stunning final product that required flawless integration across every asset type. That integration, however, exposed a fundamental technical gap.

"In ChikaBOOM!, we're blending CG environments with a 2D character we style transfer into a volumetric, shapeshifting cloud moving through shadowy interiors, bright exteriors, a sunset explosion of color,” says Ben Michel, Co-Founder of Asteria Film Co. “The native 8-bit color depth of generative tools limited the latitude our compositors and colorists had to marry those elements together."

To bridge this gap, Asteria used LTX's HDR IC-LoRA to upscale the bit depth of their AI-generated 2D assets prior to compositing. Each frame was converted from 8-bit SDR to scene-linear 16 bit HDR EXR files; the same format as the traditionally rendered elements surrounding it. In the composite, the AI-generated animation became just as malleable as anything produced in a traditional pipeline with the ability to be deftly integrated into the scene.

Gear Productions: Show Us Where it Breaks

Gear Productions is an innovative digital creation studio crafting content for a wide range of clients spanning marketing and design to film and television. Their pipeline is built on a variety of DCCs that demand high quality imagery, a non-negotiable for their clientele. 

Generative AI has proven to be a powerful tool in their workflow, particularly for product visualization, but the native 8-bit SDR output has prevented it from crossing over into final deliverables. The quality simply could not meet the standards of a professional post finishing pipeline.

"When editing AI-generated shots, the final edit always looks off, different contrast, values, color balance from shot to shot.” says Mohamed Oumoumad, CTO, Gear Productions.  “ We try to unify it in post, but 8-bit SDR leaves almost no latitude for color correction."

This is where LTX comes in. Gear began working closely with our research team approximately one year ago, entering into deep technical conversations about the challenges they faced with image output. The Gear team articulated exactly where outputs were breaking down and specified the industry standards required for final deliverables. LTX’s research team responded with questions, then test sequences. Each round, Gear ran the sequences through their pipeline and reported back on what worked and what did not, flagging issues down to the pixel level. After many iterations and close collaboration between both teams, we arrived at a solution; an IC-LoRA checkpoint on LTX-2.3 that generates 16-bit HDR images in an EXR file format.  

When it was time to stress test the EXRs in a real production environment Oumoumad took them into DaVinci Resolve

“When I first saw we could truly push colors that far with LTX, I loaded its EXR sequence in DaVinci Resolve and started playing with the color wheels. It was amazing to see I could push colors as extreme as we usually do with rendered or raw footage. That means we can now edit LTX-generated shots alongside everything else in the pipeline, and just with that, the line blurs between what's generated and what's filmed or rendered.” 

Gear Productions is now using LTX-generated footage in production, not as reference material, but as a final deliverable.
